Croissance urbaine et risques naturels en milieu de montagne : l’exemple de Man (Côte d’Ivoire)

Abstract : Poblems linked to the use of space or area are numerous: natural hazards or risks and catastrophes are included. In its common sense, the environmental question is generally considered to as a problem, bluntly speaking, the analysis refers most of time to a risk notion when urban increase occurs on sites which are less favorable to construction. Man, a town located in the western part of Côte d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast) has been developed on a crook. Since it has turned to a city in 1978, Man has known a spectacular increase. Today it remains an important city of the western region and Tonkpi region after electoral crisis which total area has turned from 1070 acres in 1990 to 2385 in 1998, which corresponds to the transformation of 1315 acres out of town area into urban area in less than six years. This big movement of population towards town has increased the urban population. This expansion of the city has been done in all directions by exploiting the site topography (mountain) cut down in thalwegs with an important human vulnerability. Unfortunately, this city will experience the big problem of distortion between settlement, planning area and demographic growth (29968 inhabitants in 1965, 50315 in 1975, 88294 in 1988, 101210 in February 1996 and 116657 inhabitants in 1998 and 148171 in 2014). In addition to the occupied area, this situation leads inhabitants to subsistence farming. Thus, they will occupy unsteady areas to live in (marshy or boggy valleys, hillsides, slope sides) which do not face functionally and quantitatively to urbanization challenge but urge them to natural disasters like droughts, erosions, torrents, collapses/lumps block fall and lands sliding which represent real nightmares at rainy seasons. This work aims at, having an axe to grind in a better knowledge of risks in which the inhabitants of mountain towns are exposed in general and, in particular Man town, and their management.
