D’Awḏaġust à Cordoue. L’or du Soudan et la politique maghrébine du califat umayyade d’al-Andalus (IVe/Xe siècle)

Abstract : The West African gold held a major role in the history of the medieval Islamic West. After being extracted and refined in the Niger bend, it was conveyed through the Sahara all the way to the Maghrib, and could then reach the Iberian Peninsula, the Latin West, the Middle East, or get even further. As medieval authors speak of it with a shroud of mystery, that gold has become a historiographical “monster” considering to the number of publications that are dedicated to it. Still, the history of the gold of Sudan in the 4/10th century remains unheeded. Indeed, it is marginal compared to in the analysis of the geopolitical stakes of the conflict that was waged between the rival caliphal dynasties of the Islamic West, the Umayyads of Cordoba (138/756-422/1031) and the Fatimids of Kairouan (297/909-567/1171). Beyond the territory entanglements of this conflict, which are obviously essential to our understanding, I will examine how this gold used to circulate, paying special attention to the itineraries that connected al-Andalus, the Western Maghrib, and the bilād al-Sūdān. Those are understudied questions, although they can shed a new light on this crucial period of the history of the Maghrib that is the 4/10th century, before the advent of the Berber dynasties.
