Une étude sur la recherche universitaire en France, par une analyse des réseaux sociaux du Laboratoire d’automatique de Grenoble, de 1979 à 1999

Abstract : The present work, realized at Grenoble-Alpes University for a Master degree in Contemporary Applied History, investigates change in French academic research activities, during a two decades period from 1979 to 1999. Change is investigated within the LAG, a Grenoble University Laboratory doing research in the field of automatic processes control. We have investigated evolutions of this laboratory’s characteristics for: its links with engineering schools, university and CNRS as supervising bodies; its workforce and budget; the effects of governmental new orientations in higher education; change in industry needs; these factors have effects on the laboratory’s links with its territorial environment. Internal to the laboratory, we have analyzed the different types of researchers’ categories: CNRS full time members, faculty members, students working for PhD, and various post-graduates status. Governmental decisions led to diverging evolutions for the numbers of people in these various categories, modifying the equilibrium between applied and academic research. We have made also visible: the teaching workload effects on the faculty’ research activities; the significant presence of women in this very technical laboratory; at the end of the period, the postdoctoral workforce waiting in the laboratory for an improbable employment in public research or faculty positions. Analysis of the types of publications of the research results has shown the predominance of English written and multi-authors’ papers. Foreign students working for a PhD are an important part of the laboratory workforce during all the period, but while their financial resources at the beginning come essentially from the French government, at the end of the period these come mainly from the foreigners’ governments. We have also analyzed this laboratory’s international reputation evolution. This work’s data come essentially from this laboratory results’ reports that have been established on a regular basis by the laboratory for the control process acted by its supervising bodies. Our investigations have used a social network analysis method based on four criteria: data at individuals’ level, quantification of analysis outcomes and graphical presentations, and a three dates time-points diachronic approach.
